A Rutland icon… the famous Normanton Church on the shores of Rutland Water

We are uniquely surrounded by three Nature Reserves. Click on the links to find local walks and discover what you might see whilst enjoying the countryside - at any time of year. All you need to do is walk out of the gate and go!

  • These woods are one of the last remnants of the ancient Rockingham Forest, noted for its amazing woodland flora including carpets of bluebells and wild garlic. In late April and Early May these woods are simply stunning!

  • Explore the surrounding villages of Yarwell, Wansford and Nassington on this circular walk, taking in the River Nene and glorious Nene valley. Take a break at Wansford’s Thirteen and the Queens Head at Nassington too.

  • Covering 520 acres, the extensive flora includes beech, birch, field maple, bluebells, primroses, celandines, violets and wood anemones, wild strawberries and garlic. Spot deer, cuckoo, foxes, red kites and buzzards.

Other places to walk... a little further afield.

  • For those looking for peaceful walks and unspoilt scenery, Rutland Water is just a 20-minute drive away. Also surrounded by a 25-mile circular track for cycling - a bike ride around the reservoir will take about 90 minutes. Cycle hire is available if you don't want to bring your own. Getting out and enjoying the water couldn't be easier at the Watersports Centre and Sailing Clubs - even a novice can get out on the water. Rutland Water Park also offers world-class trout fishing and bird watching. The Nature Reserve is home to the first breeding Ospreys in England for 150 years.

  • Whether you want to have a leisurely wander through the trees, get the kids to let off some steam at one of the exciting play areas or go on a bike ride, Fineshade Wood is bursting with opportunities to explore the great outdoors. There are several walking trails, short and long, plus the Super Worm Trail and even days out with the Gruffalo! There is something for every member of the family and just 15 minutes away! There are also easy cycle routes (and bike hire) for the family to enjoy.

  • A 90 minute walking tour of this Lincolnshire gem. The local guides deliver an entertaining and informative narration of the architecture, characters and legends of one of the finest stone towns in England. Stamford has preserved a multitude of Georgian buildings built on a medieval base with Tudor and Victorian interludes. The town has a vibrant history, much of which is still visible in the 600 listed buildings and monuments. Enjoy shopping and refreshment afterwards in this beautiful town.
